Well let me explain.

Down south its called Papaddam. I guess they like to add the ‘um’ suffix everywhere. e.g the uttappa is called as uttappam in south india.

As I’m for central India, I can relate more to Papad.

Yeah, exactly. It just means something is more or better without using a comparative.

For example:
これはもっと安い
kore wa motto yasui
This is cheaper

Of course you understand what you are comparing it to from the context of the situation or the previous sentence.

I love this site and the podcast that goes with it (I’ve been listening for several months now).

I was wondering if you could answer a question for me – I’ve also heard that the phrase “(subject) wa motto (quality) desu” can be used to express that “the (subject) is more (quality)” than something else. Is this different from yori? When would you use one over the other?

Thank you for this website. The podcasts and written text to supplement it is very effective, especially for a native english speaker trying to learn Japanese. I just listened to podcast #91 about yori. I have a question.

In the example in the beginning, the sentence A yori B wa ii (A is better than B) is provided. Why did the placement of は change in the following sentences?

Example: indo wa nihon yori ookii (The wa is placed after the subject India.

Is the example “A yori B wa ii” correct or should it have been “A wa B yori ii”?
