Hi there, I just started trying to learn Japanese... oh about a week ago or so now.  One of the resources I found is the Learn Japanese podcast and so far great, but some of the words they explain on the first episode are a little difficult to make out.  Mostly the words he uses for "a little" and "tired".  Is there a place where I can see the pronunciations for the words in Romaji?

I know, I know, people constantly like to say don't mess with Romaji learn Katakana and Hiragama, but for some of us complete newbies we are struggling enough learning to understand and speak the spoken version, trying to throw in the written word at this stage would be massive overload for me.  I fully intend to learn them later, along with some Kanji but at this stage, I want to take it a little easier.

I have fairly modest goals at this point:  To be able to watch Anime in Japanese and understand it comfortably.  Who knows where I will go with it after that?  I have always been fascinated by Japan and the Japanese people (my first instinct throughout this post was to write Nihongo and Nihonjin but I didn't want to write the name of the podcast as Learn Nihongo and didn't want to mix them so I just wrote them in english) but have always doubted my ability to learn the language.  I don't know why I decided to give it a try, but I am glad I did.  I just hope I can go somewhere with it.

This was a sort of rambling post, after all it is 2am here and I have to be up in 6 hours for work. Guess I better get back to bed, oyasumi nasai!

Firstly, welcome to the forum! Youkoso. Smiley

Secondly, well.. usually (at least the later ones) each show has a pdf document which displays the romaji and pronunciation of the word or phrase used in the show. However, without knowing which words you are referring to, I'll take a guess and say that "a little" is "chotto" (cho-toh), and tired is "tsukaretta" (tsu-ka-reh-ta). Does that help?

I think learning Japanese in whatever way that gives you motivation is a good thing. If watching anime and reading subtitles encourages you to learn the language, then that is better than sitting with your head buried in a 400 page book, yawning at every second line.  The added bonus is, if you're into samurai anime, when you come to Japan, you can freely walk around the country and challenge everyone to a duel, on the rooftop of some place at full moon. I challenged the convenience store clerk yesterday, but he declined.. but you get that.......

It's a good point you raise about learning to crawl before you walk. It's a fine line between throwing yourself in the deep end, and not being discouraged because the mountain ahead of you is a 90 degree slope. Take small steps, and.. umm, errr.. yeah, some other words of wisdom here. You know what I mean.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, we're all here to learn! Smiley

Domo!

It helps a whole lot, I thought I was pronouncing tsukaretta correctly, but I was wrong.  I wasn't far off though, but you help clear it up for me and I definitely appreciate it.  I will use my normal podcast aggregator to download the shows and see if I get the PDFs, I just downloaded the first few directly from the rss feed and got just the audio files.  So far it sounds like a great fun podcast.  The second episode seems hard though Smiley

I hesitated to say that as I didn't want anyone to get the impression that the only reason I want to learn Japanese is to watch Anime.  Its just my shortest term goal with it, I would love to be able to carry on a conversation with my wife in Japanese.  Especially when we go to the restaurant with my family, we can talk trash about them without them knowing! Smiley  I would love to some day be able to go to Japan on vacation (doubt it will happen though, its very expensive!) and to be able to speak the language while there would be great.

The added bonus is, if you're into samurai anime, when you come to Japan, you can freely walk around the country and challenge everyone to a duel, on the rooftop of some place at full moon. I challenged the convenience store clerk yesterday, but he declined.. but you get that.......

I laughed a lot at this when I read it this morning, thanks for starting my day on a laugh! haha

I am trying to suppress my natural urge to over do everything immediately and burn myself out on it.  I really am motivated and just hope I can stick with it.  Sometimes just trying to memorize some of the words seems a daunting task, but I found just listening to the language, even if I don't understand what is being said is sort of attuning my ears to the language and making it easier to memorize stuff.  Does that even make sense?

I'm going to agree with Nexus here and say that you've gotta crawl before you can walk.  Keep piling up the little things, one at a time, and when you look behind you, there will be a big mountain you've just climbed.  If you like anime, I recommend you watch as much as you like, but try to watch without subtitles sometimes.  Otherwise it's just like reading an english book whlie you listen to Japanese radio.

Good luck, and never hesitate to ask questions here.

Yeah, shame on you, Alex. Shame on you.

Just kidding, fella. While this site remains a labor of love I shall never scorn you. BUT, speaking of smiting and such, how about you theme the smiting / applaud in some sort of Japanese way? I use a forum for ALTs which uses a very similar front-end, and you either give or steal a beer from other users. Sure, it's only a bit of fun and we all seem to get on here, but how about changing applaud / smite to something like 'Give a cup of sake' / 'kancho' ? I don't think I ever bother with the buttons as they are.

May I ask why you have a pair of those?
