Learn to read Hiragana and Katakana with our new game Kana Invaders. It’s easy to play. First, chose the type of game, either Hiragana or Katakana. Then select the level of difficulty. Finally try to blast the Kana Invaders by typing the kana displayed. If you are too slow they will land on your head and it’s all game over man.

PLAY KANA INVADERS!

A huge shout out to Ricardo who made this game and designed this website. Check out his awesomeness at Cataplasma.

As we would like to improve this game, please feel free to leave your comments and feedback here.

Thanks for trying it out.

I absolutely adore this game. I have been trying to find something that will help me learn the symbols besides rote memorization and this seems to do the trick. The only thing I wish it had was a native speaker pronouncing the symbols as we blast them away, or just have a list of them at the bottom so we can make sure we are pronouncing them correctly!

Thank you!

Thanks for the comments. Maybe we can work your ideas into a future release of the game.

Hi Vince. Absolutely. I think we need to talk about this over a beer!

Amy Says:

Thanks for this! My friend and I started learning katakana a couple of weeks ago, and now we're onto level 17 – almost there. This game has been enormously fun and helpful; can't wait to move onto hiragana.

I do have one suggestion; in the first levels of the game, just ka, ki, ku etc. are used, and then the “g” forms. This was useful as we knew the symbol we were looking at was one of a potential five, and helped us cement their images in our minds.

But in later levels, other symbols are used (the sa, ta, na lot) as well as the original five, so we weren't as confident in our guesses and became confused.

Would it be possible to incorporate newbie levels? For example, a level with just ha, hi, fu, he and ho and its variations with “b” and “p”, a level with na, ni, nu, ne and no, and so on for each set. This worked best for us when first learning the “k”s.

Thanks again for the game and the great site.

I wish there was a list in each level that tells us what characters we are to expect to blast away in romaji.
