Tokyo Weekender on NHK

This is a video segment about the Tokyo Weekender Magazine which I am involved with. It’s a magazine for the foreign community living in Tokyo and has been going for about 40 years.

The other day, NHK came, filmed around the office and followed Kelly the editor of the magazine on her rounds. I’m in the video for about 2 seconds trying and failing to not look like a complete idiot speaking Japanese.

Some of the Japanese in this isn’t too challenging so this might be good practice for you budding students of the language. NHK was also kind enough to provide subtitles for our interviews so there is some reading practice for you too.

Enjoy.

NHK'S coverage of the 'new Weekender' demonstares its position and integrity within the resident international community. I've lived here since 1964, so I recall fondly the publication's first days and how eagerly readers would pick it up at designated spots in town (including the various cloakroom counters at The Imperial, where I made sure it was available every Friday as soon as it arrived.) It was OUR paper, about us and for us, and Corky Alexander always made it fun and informative.

And the Tokyo Weekender now is THE only English publication with a proper society column - about US! And about the world many of us live in, at least a part of the time. More than any other English language publication here, the Tokyo Weekender is about its readers. I know people who pick up and read Weekender specifically for Bill Hersey's column and photos - sadly somewhat toned down these days in size and graphic panache, but that's a quibble - and Hersey is an institution. May Weekender never lose this sort of Living International Treasure.

The new young lady editor seems to have the energy and enthusiasm needed to keep the publication afloat during these trying times. It cannot be easy assessing what to feature in a magazine read primarily by non-Japanese living in Japan, whose length of stay and accordingly their familiarity with the country and subsequent range of interests vary so dramatically.

    Appare, henshucho!
