How many times did you say were going to study Japanese?
Hi, I’m Alex and I’m the creator of Learn Japanese Pod, a website and podcast that teaches you how to speak and understand Japanese fluently.
And now, I’m about to open a new Online Self Study Japanese Course. If you are a complete beginner and don’t know where to start then this is the course for you.
Are you planning to visit Japan on holiday? Or perhaps you are already living in Japan and studied a little Japanese but got stuck, frustrated and then gave up? Does that sound like you?
Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered because I was there too.

Yes, tell me when the new premium area is open and give me a 50% discount when I decide to join!
Who is this online course for?
I’m glad you ask. It’s designed for YOU: a basic level Japanese learner who really wants to improve their speaking fluency and listening.
Even if you are a complete beginner or you already studied a little Japanese but got completely stuck and frustrated and want to rip their textbooks apart into a million tiny pieces, keep reading.
The online audio and video lessons will train you how to hold and understand basic conversations in Japanese for a range of practical situations for daily life and sightseeing around Japan. So this is great if you want to come to Japan on a trip or perhaps stay here to study the language in more depth.

I also post fun challenges on the forum for people to post their own Haiku, do self introductions in Japanese and also attempt funny tongue twisters. It’s like homework, but it’s actually fun and you can show off your new Japanese skills to the other members too!
When I was studying Japanese in university, I surprisingly found that I actually learned a lot of Japanese from my fellow classmates. So I wanted to recreate that again with the forums which will be one of the most effective ways for you to learn more quickly.

What’s different about this course compared to all the other stuff out out there?
1. We base our lessons on unscripted conversations, not grammar textbooks
It would be easy for use to show you a bunch of grammar rukes and long word lists for you to study. But that’s not what you need. You need to learn Japanese that is commonly spoken by people on the street. Oh if only you knew someone who lived in Japan for over 20 years and could tell you that. Oh Wait! I CAN!
And that’s how Asuka and I researched and developed this course by simply asking Japanese people what they would say in various unscripted situations. We recorded them and used that to create really natural conversations for you to learn from.
2. You’ll focus on getting your speaking and listening skills up to speed in less time
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate grammar. However, in my experience it’s better to concentrate on doing lots of listening and repetition of set phrases when starting out in Japanese, at least in my experience. We’ve included a audio drills for you to listen and repeat to get you speaking even if you don’t have a teacher. We’ve cut out stuff that I was made to study in university but actually never used in daily life or traveling around Japan.
3. We don’t do boring cookie cutter language courses
Learn Japanese Pod is basically only Asuka and me. However, we do put our heart into making Learn Japanese Pod as enjoyable as we can for you to learn with. We hate generic language learning sites with 78 different languages that seem to teach you in this boring cookie cutter way. We want to have a little more fun and make it real with real insider tips and info from Japan. So don’t worry, we don’t have an automated system that will teach you how to book your skiing holiday in Florida.
4. We love fun and general silliness
If you have listened to our podcasts you’ll probably know that we don’t like overly serious and boring language lessons. We try to add fun and a sprinkling of silly to make the learning process way more fun and engaging. At the end of the day, learning Japanese is about motivation so you might as well have fun along the way.
What’s the best study method for beginner Japanese students?
I’ve tried lots of textbooks, studied Japanese privately and at university and looked at a million different memory techniques and language learning tricks.
However, to be honest, the best way I discovered to improve my fluency was by listening to audio and repeating it again and again.
This method is great because it’s easy, simple and you’ll avoid getting stuck and frustrated by boring difficult grammar.
It also gets you speaking Japanese quickly even if you don’t have a teacher or someone to practice with.
That’s how I got started in Japanese and why I created the course for YOU in this way.
“But I suck at languages…”
No you don’t, you just haven’t found the right study method that’s right for YOU. I used to think that I sucked at languages too. That was until I eventually understood that any skill, even speaking fluent Japanese can be mastered if you break it down into small enough chunks.
And that’s how the course is made for you. It is split into small, easy, entertaining 10 – 20 minute audio lessons that are all practical and can be used immediately. You can easily download them to your mobile phone or PC so you can study at your own pace and just listen and learn. Although I have included PDFs and grammar explanations, you can understand everything you need to know just from listening to the audio lessons. And if you have trouble memorising vocabulary and phrases (I know I do…) I included audio drills so to make everything you learn stick.
“But I don’t have the time to study…”
I’m going to be straight with you here, you might want to sit down. Are you sitting down? Good. Learning a language takes time. A long time. (Gasp). And don’t believe people who tell you otherwise. But… and this is a big “but”… If you break anything down into small enough chunks then you can still make progress. So the audio lessons we have are short, straightforward and can be listened to on your commute to work in the car or train. If you have time at home, you can log into the site and take our short online quizzes that measure your progress to keep you motivated and on track.
Who made this?
Asuka and me, Alex. We’re both great friends and love traveling, adventure, learning new languages and exploring different cultures. We also like teasing each other when recording the podcasts and drinking too much coffee.
The reason we made Learn Japanese Pod was because we thought there needed to be a more fun and less nerdy alternative to Japanese studies out there in textbook land and on the internet. We felt that Japanese language studies had been slightly taken over by anime and manage nerds. Not that we don’t love that stuff, it’s just that we felt there was way more to
